Summer ’18

Hi everyone!! I hope you all are enjoying your summer vacations thus far, I know I am! Well, for those of you that don’t know, my name is Sam Mendelsohn and I am going to be a junior this upcoming fall. A junior that is 5 feet tall and doesn’t look her age, but yes, a junior. This summer has been pretty amazing so far and I still have so much more to look forward to which is pretty exciting!

After the craziness that is finals week at Geneseo, I was so amped to be able to come home and do nothing but relax for a while. The first few weeks of summer consisted of me sitting by my pool with friends and family just enjoying each other’s company and the beautiful weather (Buffalo has its moments– I promise). My friends and I have also gone to the beach, had countless movie nights, and have just been hanging out and catching up. I missed my friends from home so much and it has been so awesome to reconnect with everyone! Of course, I missed my family a bunch too, but that’s always implied.

Then in early June I celebrated by 20th birthday! I had dinner with my mom, dad, and grandma at home. Normally my brother Jack would be home to celebrate as well, but he is currently working at KeyBank in Ohio so he couldn’t be there. However, he did promise me a make-up birthday dinner when he comes home next, so I will definitely be holding him to that (Jack, if you’re reading this, I hope you didn’t forget!).

I then found my summer job–a camp counselor for my town! By the time this blog has been posted it will have just been my first few days. I am super excited because I absolutely love working with kids and I get to be active 24/7 which is a huge plus. As a camp, we get to go on so many awesome field trips to amusement parks, beaches, and escape rooms (just to name a few). This summer I have also been babysitting and, starting in a few weeks, I will be coaching soccer for 3-4 year olds as I have done for the past 5 or 6 years—it is hilarious to watch and they are adorable!! I am also going to be coaching a few volleyball camps at local high schools as well, which I have also done for the past few summers.

Babysitting fun (:

Speaking of volleyball, I have been playing as much as I can with friends and old teammates. I have done a few open gyms with some old club teammates and plan to continue to do so throughout the rest of the summer. I was also able to get some touches when I was ON (not in—don’t say in, you’ll get yelled at lol) Long Island visiting some teammates! Kat, Abby May, and I drove up to Long Island to visit our fellow classmates Shea and Grace. We also had a plan to surprise the upcoming sophomores- as they were visiting the same weekend- but sadly that surprise did not work out as well as we thought it would (shout out Grace Cergol—just kidding we still love ya). Regardless, it was so much fun to see everyone again and catch up.

Pool day!!!

Me at one of my open gyms from home!
A little 2 v 2 game in Grace’s back yard! (Look at her dog Enzo)

While on Long Island we went to the beach, tanned out by the pool, and ate wayyyyyyy too many bagels and slices of pizza. But yes, the bacon, egg, and cheeses are 100% worth the hype and I would highly recommend trying them.

Bacon, egg and cheese!!

Being with almost all of my teammates again made me realize how excited I am to get back into Schrader gym for preseason and spend time with this amazing group of girls—I can’t wait!

Another hobby of mine this summer has been trying to come up with different healthy food options that I can make at home. For example, something I have really enjoyed doing is making a different smoothie bowl each day for breakfast! I change up what goes in the actual smoothie as well as what goes on top! They are soooo yummy and are super good for you as well—everyone should try it out!!

In the smoothie: frozen strawberries, banana, soy milk, vanilla yogurt. On top: strawberries, coconut shavings, chocolate granola, chia seeds, blackberries.
In the smoothie: spinach, frozen mango, soy milk, banana. On top: almond butter, vanilla granola, coconut shavings, chia seeds, blueberries, chocolate granola and strawberries.

So, as the countdown to preseason begins I just want to leave some messages for the returners as well as the new incoming freshmen!

To my returners,

It has truly been a blessing to be able to get to know all of you both on and off the court and I cannot wait to spend another season with you guys by my side. There is no doubt that we are hungry for more wins and are ready to work incredibly hard to see results. Let’s do it boysssss- love ya!

To my incoming froshies,

Enjoy this summer as it will fly by faster than you could ever imagine. Spend as much time with your friends and family and appreciate the moments you have with them! I know I can speak for the entire team when I say that we cannot wait to welcome you into our GSUVB family. It is amazing how fast we will all click and you will be comfortable in no time. I can’t wait to see you guys in August!

Well that has been my summer so far and I hope you are all enjoying yours as well!

Wishing you ALL the best,

Sam Mendelsohn

Hey everybody! It’s me, Mary! I am a sophomore (which is so weird to say) setter and I hope everyone is having an awesome summer. I’m here to tell you about what I have been doing this summer, so let’s get right into it!

After my last finals week of freshman year, it was so nice to go home and de-stress. I got to see some of my closest friends, hang out with family for a few days, and soon get to work! Working this summer has been HUGE for me. I have two jobs right now, I am a waitress at a cute restaurant in town and I also babysit a few days a week. I try to keep my days busy so I have some structure and don’t just sit around all day.

It has been great to spend some time with family since I’ve been home. My mom, dad, sisters, and I went to a Yankees game all together and it was so much fun. It was actually my first ever MLB game and it was great to experience it with my family!

I’ve gone on a few adventures so far this summer. A lot of times, my friends and I will go on hikes or watch the sunset over the mountains from a scenic spot. It’s pretty much the only thing to do around where I live, so we I to take advantage of it. There’s plenty of waterfalls, overlooks, and just places to go to sit and relax if you are looking for a good view. One of my favorite things we did was going to a drive-in movie theater. It was a perfect night for a movie, but I may or may not have fallen asleep.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The boys 🙂 (minus Moose, Scheff, Kendyll, and Emily)

My second adventure was the trip to LOOONGGG Island! It was so great to catch up with some GSUVB girls. All the girls upstate took a nice road trip for a few days to Long Island and we stayed at Kiersten’s and got Ralph’s Italian Ice, we stayed at Shea’s for a day and swam at her house and ate bagels, and our final destination was in Long Beach to stay with gabby and have a beach day! Some of us got a nice tan, others got a nice burn (Allison, LOL) but we all had an awesome time.

~Summer 2018~

Hellllooooo everyone! My name is Grace Cergol and I am going to be tackling junior year starting this fall. Let me repeat, JUNIOR YEAR. That is crazy to hear but even crazier to say. It is finally starting to feel like summer here on Long Island with the 85 degree weather and the blaring sun. Even though I am not always able to lay outside and tan each day, which trust me I would do 24/7, I am definitely making the most out of my  busy summer.

To kick off my vacation, I was hired as an intern at two different companies, the Huntington Arts Council, which is 10 minutes away from my house, and Identity/Triptent, which is located on 14th St. in Manhattan. On Mondays and Wednesdays at the H.A.C., I work on the things like the local newspaper and web posts about a concert series they are holding this summer. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I commute about 1 1/2 hours to the city for my other internship with Identity Media. Some of the bigger projects I’ve worked on were coming up with campaign slogans for different companies and coming up with numerous celebrities to promote different company’s products (like Sophia Bush for Pandora). I am learning a bunch of new things that I will apply later on in life when I step into the real world and get an actual job.

Buuutttt I do get Friday’s off! Thankfully, every Friday has been beautiful so far and I’ve been able to go to the beach to TAN ~YAY~ with my friends, so we are praying for more Friday’s like that.

Okay, now to the fun stuff 🙂 (just kidding, my internships are super fun). A few weeks after getting home, Shea, Gabby and I went to the Governor’s Ball Music Festival on Randalls Island in the city. There we saw so many performers that we loved like Eminem, N.E.R.D., Lil Uzi, Khalid, and Amine. And let me tell you, when I say it sounds like Eminem is speaking another language because he is rapping so fast, I absolutely mean that.

You mean “Ball is Life” ha

About 11 days after Gov Ball on June 14th, I turned 20! I feel so old now and everyone keeps saying, “You’re halfway to 40” which scares me, a lot. This year on my birthday, I did what I always have done, just go to the beach. But the day after, I got to do a little surprising myself. Well sorta. All of the rising sophomores had visited us’s for a weekend but they had no idea that the rising juniors, from upstate, were also going to be joining us. Of course, I had to accidentally ruin the surprise the morning of, but we still had a great time together.

That weekend I also made Abby, Kat and Sam try as much famous Long Island food as possible. Well, they actually just ate a lot of bagels @AbbyMay. But I also did make them try Little Vincent’s famous cold cheese slice and they pretty much devoured them.

Besides the fun, little excursion with the team, I have been trying to play as much volleyball as I can. I’m going to try to go to all of my sister’s high school open gyms (sorry Mia lol), play beach, and play with my old club team.

The first time I played with my club team this summer, we scrimmaged a 16’s team, which was fun, but we also got to share some of our recruiting/college volleyball experiences. DO NOT WORRY, all good things about Geneseo veebz and the school in general. I loved talking about our culture/community with them and I also told them that if they are looking to be recruited to hit up Coach Hunter and get on the Geneseo radar ;).

spot Enzo (my dog)… the biggest baller

As for the rest of my summer, my family and I plan on going to Bermuda, my sister (hopefully) and I (definitely) will be attending the Geneseo Volleyball overnight camp, and my friends and I would love to go on our annual Hamptons trip. Oh and of course more volleyball at home.

So yes, I guess I’ve had a pretty eventful summer so far and hope to continue to keep busy. Even though I do love it at home, I absolutely cannot wait to get back up to Geneseo. You froshies are going to LOVE it and we can’t wait to make you feel right at home in our disgustingly hot gym (jk it’s not too bad). And to my current teammates, I can’t wait to see all of you nuggets again and maybe I’ll try to surprise you upstaters one time, but I promise I won’t ruin it. Hope everyone has MARVELOUS summers and see you peeps so soon!

xo always,

Grace Cergol

Summer 2018 :)

Hiya everyone! I’m Bridget Lougen and I am an incoming sophomore (wow that’s going to take some getting used to). Happy summer, hope everyone is getting nice and tan ( @ Kiersten Colvin)!! This summer so far has been quite busy and seems like it is going to continue this way until I head back to school.

My summer started off with me doing the thing I love most, volleyball. After missing all of spring season due to the 3+ injuries going on in my leg I am back! My beach partner and fellow incoming soph Alex Frank play in a 2s league on Wednesday nights (currently in first). We also played in a couple of tournament at Sharkey’s and Sylvan Beach to kick off our summer with all of out friends.

Besides volleyball, going to Onondaga Lake Park with my home friends, and working at Target I’ve spent a lot of time traveling to visit the rest of the team. After being home for only about one week, I took a trip to see Mary Bartkus in Albany for the day. A week IMG_9677after that I met up with Kat, Amay, and Mary at Amay for a day by the pool.

I am currently on my big trip of the summer, LONG ISLAND!! To get here it took 4 different cars, a Uber, and 2 trains. All 5 of the sophomore upstaters made the trip to see the 3 sophomores that live down here. We were even “surprised” by the upstate Juniors who also made the trip down for the weekend (sorry guys you can’t anything by us). While this trip is very short we have gotten a lot in. We met up with everyone at Shea’s, had a beach day at Long Beach, and tried all of the famous Long Island food.

While I have done a lot of stuff already this summer, I can’t wait for the other fun things i am planning on doing with the 62 days I have left before I get to go back to my favorite place with my favorite people:)

Happy Summer!

Hello, everyone! My name is Kat Vernon, a psychology major/sociology minor, proud Geneseo tour guide, and soon-to-be junior this upcoming year at Geneseo! HAPPY SUMMER! I feel like I’ve been home from school for MONTHS, but it’s really only been a couple weeks. Everyone stay calm, don’t worry– I am definitely making the most of my summer so far.

As some of you may know, my dream since I can remember was to be a cinematographer. I’ve always had a desire to create videos and edit them, it’s something I’ve been doing since middle school. Somewhere along my high school career I was a bit discouraged and felt that maybe I wouldn’t be successful in the film industry, so I decided to pursue psychology instead. While I truly love psychology, film editing still has a huge place in my heart and I’ve decided to not give that dream up. This summer, I have decided to pursue my dreams the best that I can by filming as much as I can. I’ve been making silly videos with my friends, music videos [(shoutout to Shea, Grace, and Sam for our original music videos, we’re seriously famous on campus because of them, I SWEAR (check them out on my YouTube channel!)], and also some more serious projects I am working on, such as a documentary about Rochester, New York. Since I’ve been filming a lot of moments, I decided to compile some of them together for this blog post! I’ll have it linked at the bottom of this paragraph, feel free to check it out, and also check out some of my other videos if you want on my YouTube page (please subscribe, I’m desperate. I may only have a couple subscribers now but just you guys wait, I’ll be flowing in subscribers one day).

Okay, now onto my summer so far! Most days, I have been helping my mom babysit my 3-year-old niece, Addison, who many of you know. If you know me, you know that I am  O B S E S S E D with Addison and absolutely love spending time with her. She’s weird and wild just like me, so we always have a good time together. My favorite thing to do with her is ask her if she wants a cup of coffee—she gets VERY upset with me and tells me that she is way too little for coffee and will NOT have a cup. I love teasing her (I never had a little sibling to pick on, I was always the little sibling who got picked on) but I promise, I’m nice, and I know she secretly loves the attention.

A couple days before memorial day weekend, my friend Kate invited me and a couple people to go stay at her grandparent’s house on the Saint Lawrence River (the Thousand Islands). Kate, myself, Mandy, Harrison, and Erik drove up there on Wednesday and stayed until Friday, and had an amazing time! We paddle boarded, jumped in the 50 degree Fahrenheit water (absolutely freezing, was not a fan, would not recommend to a friend, 3/10), kayaked, and had several spontaneous dance parties (as you will see in the video).

Besides that fun trip, I have just been hanging out with my friends. I made a trip to Syracuse to see Abby May, Mary, Alex, Bridget, Kendyll, and our friend Brittany and we had a blast! I am also working at Hotshots, where I ref indoor beach volleyball games in the evening, and sometimes I get to ref down at Charlotte beach! I am actually learning so much more about volleyball than I ever imagined, just by watching people play all the time.

Alex and I in Syracuse

For the rest of the summer, I will be trying to say yes to everything (okay that sounds crazy, you know what I mean though, saying yes to good things). I’m hoping to visit the Long Island squad (shoutout Grace, Shea, Kiersten, Gabby, Moose) eventually and eat a lot of bagels down there. My mom and I (shoutout mom) also always go to York Beach, Maine each summer, so we will definitely be making a trip up there at some point!

Well that’s about it! While I am having a great summer so far, I’m ready to go back to Geneseo. I absolutely love it there and I know all of you incoming first years will too! Quick shoutout to my teammates – I love and miss you guys and cannot wait until I get to see you guys again. I am so thankful to be a part of the Geneseo Volleyball community and I can’t wait to get back into the gym for pre-season and to meet all of you newbies! Have a great rest of your summers, everyone!
