Week Eight: Fights, Fun, & Frights!

Good evening, Knights fans! We’re back with our eighth (!!) weekly blog update with tons to fill you in on from our weekend and our upcoming week!

This past Friday, GSUVB put up a great fight and came out with an awesome win against SUNY POLY. It truly was a team effort for us to come away with this W and nothing feels better than a win like that!

While there’s no doubt that these Knights have a blast with each other each and every time we step into the gym, we decided to add some extra fun to our schedule at a Haunted Hayride this past Saturday night. Some were crying tears of fear, others tears of laughter, and some were too tough to shed any tears, but all in all we had a great night getting to spend some time together outside of the gym making memories we’ll always remember.

It was a busy weekend for the Knights as we also had our second annual Little Knights Camp yesterday! It was such a great day for us to share our knowledge of the game with young girls who will someday be the future of our sport, maybe even here at Geneseo! A huge thank you to all of our players for their wonderful work with the Little Knights and to the girls who came out to spend the afternoon with us. We hope to see you again in the spring!

This week is another busy one for GSUVB with our second annual Attacking Alzheimer’s Match right around the corner and our final round of SUNYAC Pool Play at SUNY Cortland this weekend.

Please check out the following blog post with all the information you need about our Attacking Alzheimer’s match this Wednesday 10/16 at 7PM! T-shirt sales are well-underway today and Wednesday from 11am-4pm in the Union as well as before/during the match. Our silent auction baskets will also be available for bidding Monday-Wednesday of this week right outside of the entryway to Schrader Gymnasium as well as before/during the match. ALL proceeds from these sales will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association as we try to do our part in making a difference in the Alzheimer’s community. We’re so excited for this event and we can’t wait to see you all come out and support us this Wednesday night! https://geneseovolleyball.wordpress.com/2016/10/14/attacking-alzheimers-match-1019-7pm/

After we do our part in helping our community, we’ll have one great practice on Thursday to get us ready for our final weekend of SUNYAC play against Oneonta, Buffalo State, and Cortland this weekend. As always, our goals remain the same—find a way to get better each and every time we step on the court and keep bringing the positive energy, positive communication, and steadfast support for our teammates. With all of that under our belts, only good things can come for GSUVB at SUNY Cortland this Friday and Saturday!

Once again, we thank all of our friends and family for their support so far this season and can’t wait to see you all this week! GO KNIGHTS!

I started volleyball when I was… 9 years old.

My favorite thing about GSU Volleyball is… How the team members are always encouraging each other to work harder and push for more.

The best road trip I’ve ever taken was… in the southern part of Africa with my family.

This summer, I… I competed in the European University Games for beach volleyball in Croatia and travelled there afterwards.

The best thing about GSU is: the peaceful campus with many green spaces.

When I run out onto the court in Schrader Gym, I think:
Let’s Go!

If I wasn’t playing college volleyball, I would be… traveling the country.

My idea of happiness is:
being surrounded by the people that matter to you, and achieving your goals.

I would like to have the ability to… be a great singer.

My fantasy job/career would be… becoming a context expert in a particular field of social psychology and teach courses at universities.

One thing I absolutely have to do before I turn 40 is… travel South America.
My post-college/career plans are… to get my Masters and then I would like to take a gap year to travel around the globe.

If I could bring one thing from my hometown to college, it would be… an unlimited amount of ‘stroopwafels’, a Dutch cookie.

I can’t live without… my family who is always very supportive of me.

The greatest invention of the last 100 years is… the Macbook.

My greatest fear is…heights.

My greatest achievement is… going on this exchange to SUNY Geneseo.

A historical figure I would most like to meet is… Nelson Mandela.

If you could have one superpower, it would be to…  be able to teletransport myself.

If you were Coach Dunn for a day, I would… try out a game of Bossaball with the team.

Thanks, Luca! Tune in to our match against SUNY POLY tonight @ 7PM to check out what Luca brings to GSUVB all the way from the Netherlands! GO KNIGHTS!

Week Seven: A Little R&R

Good afternoon, Knights fans! We hope you’re enjoying this nice long weekend as much as we are—it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for some rest and relaxation after a tough weekend of SUNYAC Pool Play!

We faced some great competition this weekend and while we came away with one great win against Plattsburgh and two tough losses against New Paltz and Brockport, we battled against some strong teams in each and every set. Our goal has been to keep finding ways to improve and learn every time we step on the court and we certainly achieved that goal this weekend! With only three more weekends of competition left in our regular season schedule, it is a goal we will continue to set for ourselves each and every time we compete.

Coming up this week for GSUVB are a few practices to keep tuning up our skills, a match at SUNY POLY on Friday night, and our second annual Little Knights Camp on Sunday! It’s a busy week ahead for the Knights, but many great things are ahead!

Be sure to share with your friends and family our Little Knights Camp, which will take place this Sunday October 16th from 3-6PM in Schrader Gymnasium. This is an awesome event for K-6th graders to learn and practice all aspects of the game from our very own Knights! Registration is $30 and this will include a two-hour skills session with our players and coaches as well as a one-hour autograph session and pizza party with the team! See the link below for more information and registration.

Also, don’t forget to put our Attacking Alzheimer’s match on your calendar! The match will be at 7PM on Wednesday October 19th against St. John Fisher. We will be conducting t-shirt sales and a silent auction to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association, so please share this event with your fellow Knights fans and help GSUVB make a difference in the community. Be sure to keep an eye on all of our social media platforms this week for more reminders and information about both of these awesome events!

GSUVB wishes you a fantastic rest of your Monday and we continue to appreciate all of your support! GO KNIGHTS!

My favorite athlete is… Derek Jeter.

My favorite movie is… The Last Song.

My favorite TV show is… Grey’s Anatomy.

My favorite sports team is… the Buffalo Bills.

My favorite food is… a pulled pork sandwich.

My favorite thing about GSU Volleyball is… how close we all are. My teammates have become my best friends and college would have been a completely different experience without them, or volleyball.

The best road trip I’ve ever taken was… a trip last year when we stopped at Lizzy’s house to eat. It was so fun to hang out with the team and everyone’s family. It will be a road trip that I won’t forget.

Before every match, I… listen to music, set up the camera, fill my water bottle and most importantly I make sure that Trish fixes my knee pads and socks because I can’t get them to look right.

In off-season training, I worked on… getting to the ball faster, squaring up to the middle, having a good contact point and keeping my hands high.

This summer, I…worked weddings at a Joseph’s Country Manor, hung out with my friends and family, and went on vacation to Disney World.

The best thing about GSU is… the feeling of a community and how welcoming the campus is. It is also a beautiful place to call home.

When I run out into Schrader Gym, I think… of how excited I am to get to play with my teammates in our own gym and what we can do to win.

If I wasn’t playing college volleyball, I would be… really bored and have to find another hobby. Maybe I would find a team to play broomball since it is really fun.

My role models are… my parents. They are both amazing people so I hope I can be just like them.

I would like to have the ability to… sing. I try but I’m really bad.

One thing I absolutely have to do before I turn 40 is…go back to visit France.

If I could bring one thing from my hometown to college, it would be… Picasso’s Pizza or Duff’s chicken wings.

My greatest fear is…heights.

Week Six: SUNYACs, Part 2

Happy Monday, Knights fans! We hope you had a fantastic weekend! It was a great one here in Schrader Gymnasium as we celebrated our four seniors and came away with a great win against Farmingdale State on Saturday night. We can’t thank our families and friends enough for coming out to support us and for putting together a beautiful celebratory tailgate after the match—it’s days like that that remind us just how amazing the GSUVB family is!

We’re back at it this week with, not one, but TWO lifting sessions, four great practices, and our second SUNYAC weekend of the season at SUNY New Paltz this Friday and Saturday. It’s the first time in a few weeks that we’ll be able to get in the gym for four days in a row and keep tuning up our skills before we face some big competition! Starting off the week bright and early this morning with a strength workout, we’re more than ready to hit the ground running and make this our best week yet.

A few upcoming events to keep an eye out for—first, GSUVB will be hosting our second annual Little Knights Camp on Sunday October 16th from 3-6PM in Schrader Gymnasium. This is an awesome event for K-6th graders to learn and practice all aspects of the game from our very own Knights! Registration is $30 and campers will receive a $5 discount if registration is completed by October 9th (see link below for more information)!

Second, be sure to put our Attacking Alzheimer’s match on your calendar!
