Back with our Game Day:”Meet Your Knights” series, we have first-year Libero/DS Sam Mendelsohn from Buffalo, NY!
My full name is… Samantha Ann Mendelsohn.
My nickname is…Sam.
My birthday is…June 4th.
My major is…Biology.
My family members are…Karen (mom), Steve (dad), & Jack (brother—21 yrs.)
My family members who competed in college and/or professional athletics are…my brother, Jack. He plays soccer at John Carroll University.
My hobbies/interests are… watching Grey’s Anatomy and hanging out with friends and family.
I chose GSU… for many reasons: it is a perfect distance from my home (about an hour), the academics are challenging and are well-known, and of course for the volleyball! When I first began my college search, Geneseo was definitely a school I was considering, but never one that I was super crazy about. That is, until I visited the amazing campus and got in contact with Coach Dunn about playing volleyball. And now, I couldn’t be happier with the decision that I made and absolutely can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
My favorite athlete is…Derek Jeter.
My favorite movie is…The Benchwarmers.
My favorite TV show is…Greys Anatomy.
My favorite sports team is…the Buffalo Bills.
My favorite food is…chicken caesar wraps.
My favorite place on campus is…the Union.
My favorite cartoon character is…Spongebob.
My favorite vacation spot is…Orlando, FL.
My favorite volleyball player is…Kerri Walsh Jennings.
I started volleyball in…7th grade.
My most memorable match is… my first match at states my senior year. It was the first time our team had made it to states so playing at that location was so new to me and everything about it was just so exciting.
My favorite thing about GSU Volleyball is… the family atmosphere because everyone was immediately so welcoming and made me feel right at home. I came in very nervous about connecting with the girls on the team but that fear very quickly disappeared the first day I met them.
The best road trip I’ve ever taken was… the bus ride my high school volleyball took when we went to states. It was the first time that the volleyball team was going to states in the program’s history, so we were all super excited to go!
Before every match, I… have to braid my hair. Most of the time I listen to music as well.
In off-season training, I worked on… building up my strength in my legs and shoulders as well as working on my technique.
The best thing about GSU is… the smaller class sizes, beautiful sunsets, and of course the volleyball team.
My idea of happiness is… being with my family hanging out by our pool during the summer and then having a meal as a family later in the day.
My role models are…my dad and my grandpa.
I would like to have the ability to… focus on things for longer periods of time without interruptions because I tend to get distracted easily.
My fantasy job/career would be…cancer research.
One thing I absolutely have to do before I turn 40 is…get a puppy.
My post-college/career plans are…
If I could bring one thing from my hometown to college, it would be…my bed.
The most unusual thing the average person would not know about me is… during classes I am constantly playing with my hair and tapping my feet.
I can’t live without… a fan on me while I sleep, I absolutely cannot sleep when I’m hot.
My greatest fear is… if I am swimming at the beach and a fish swims by me and I can feel it brush up against my legs.
My greatest achievement… making history at my high school by being part of the first volleyball team in the history of the program to make it to states.
The most famous person I’ve ever met is… my “aunt” who is an actress (she is my mom’s cousin but I call her my aunt), Carla Gugino. She has been on Broadway and starred in movies such as Spy Kids, Night at the Museum, and San Andres.
If I could have one superpower, it would be… the ability to transport anywhere I want.
Thanks, Sam! Check out #13’s fantastic defensive skills TONIGHT in GSUVB’s home match against Alfred University @ 7PM!
